Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

[edit]
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

Special notes

Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.

Discussion for Today

[edit]
This page is transcluded from Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025_February_1

February 1

[edit]

NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Category:Archaeological history of Southern Africa

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Overlapping categories SMasonGarrison 17:36, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Archaeology of Western Africa

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: I'm pretty sure that this region is supposed to be "West Africa", but I wanted to double check. This entire tree needs reviewing, as many of the related categories are missing parents as well as inconsistent naming/capitalization SMasonGarrison 17:34, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nightclubs by populated place

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: All contain 1 or 2 articles. Not useful for navigation. Merge per WP:NARROW. –Aidan721 (talk) 17:19, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Cinemas and movie theaters populated places

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: All contain only 1 article. Not useful for navigation. Merge per WP:NARROW. –Aidan721 (talk) 16:55, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:1920s in Malaysian sport

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Anachronistic "YYYY in Country" categories for a country that didn't exist by that name in those years. As always, we name categories of this type with the name that the country had at the time, not the name it has now if that's different, so these need to be either renamed to "YYYY(s) in British Malayan sport" or just deleted as too small to be warranted — note that these were all newly created within the past two days as new parentage for longstanding "YYYY in Malayan football" categories that already existed at a more chronistically correct name, and have no other contents but that one category each. Bearcat (talk) 15:56, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not with the question of whether they're even needed at all being up in the air, no. Bearcat (talk) 16:01, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, ok makes sense. I would propose merging all the "YYYY in Malayan football" to Category:1920s in British Malayan sport (renamed) and the appropriate "YYYY in Asian football" category. Then delete the nominated year categories. Tagged football categories and listed below. –Aidan721 (talk) 16:13, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Monuments and historic places of Bologna

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: I had previously nominated this for speedy merging with Category:Monuments and memorials in Bologna. However Marcocapelle pointed out that none of these are actually monuments or memorials, so deletion is a better option. There is no established category tree for this naming convention. All of the articles are already in Category:Piazzas in Bologna or a subcategory of Category:Buildings and structures in Bologna. –Aidan721 (talk) 15:54, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Copy of speedy discussion

Category:Zoos in Lagos

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Contains 1 article each. Not useful for navigation. Merge per WP:NARROW. –Aidan721 (talk) 14:26, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Trump administration controversies

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Trump was already president, I don't see a valid reason to merge events from two administrations into one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cahlin29 (talkcontribs)

Category:Keijō Nippō

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: To match title of parent article Keijō nippō. I wrote that Wikipedia article and created the category, initially using the title casing. I then changed it to use sentence case. I did this because I learned the use of sentence case for titles of works is widespread in East Asian studies. For example, it is recommended by default in The Chicago Manual of Style, which is used by many academic journals. For common name evidence, this ngram wasn't so clear to me. So I just defaulted to what's done in academia. seefooddiet (talk) 03:53, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:United States secretaries of the treasury

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: The Treasury refers to a proper noun. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 02:16, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Events by eons

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Yet another redudnant "events" category scheme. The geologic time scale corresponds to events in Earth's history. Thus, the list above is in chronological order rather than from top to bottom. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 02:02, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ukrainian sportspeople killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine

[edit]
Convert Category:Ukrainian sportspeople killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine to article Sportspeople killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Nominator's rationale: Shoft be listified. Non-defining Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2024_May_18#Category:Sportspeople_who_died_in_wars SMasonGarrison 15:46, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. Possibly listify. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:08, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as it is defining according to the following "a defining characteristic is one that reliable, secondary sources commonly and consistently define, in prose, the subject as having....if the characteristic would not be appropriate to mention in the lead section of an article" Nayyn (talk)
That's not sufficient. The intersection needs to be defining, and the other case has covered the broader category. SMasonGarrison 00:46, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What does "Shoft be listified" mean?
This follows a category on Ukrainian Wikipedia.
What is not defining about this?
It feels personal @Smasongarrison as you've nominated at least 5 of my categories in the last weeks to be deleted.. Nayyn (talk) 19:11, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"Should". It's not "personal", but I did look through your categories given the concerns I noticed seemed systematic. SMasonGarrison 00:45, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you're going through my edit history to find things to submit here, then it's definitely personal.
That's not "assuming good faith". Especially when it's pointed out that, "Other stuff exists" is not a good argument, yet you've not submitted those similar for deletion. Just a trawl of my contributions en masse.
I've got the message, don't make categories. I'll make my contributions elsewhere. Nayyn (talk) 00:46, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: No evidence has been provided to demonstrate that it is a defining intersection; does such evidence exist? If not kept, should it be listified or deleted?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 22:42, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not to mention the role that this intersection has been elevated by the Ukrainian Government, who describe these people as "Sports Angels" it is more than a relevant distinction.
It should not be listified because who is going to create and maintain this? The category is useful and just as appropriately defining as many other categories on this site. @Smasongarrison should have taken two minutes to do WP:BEFORE before nominating another one of these, as they have not provided any evidence to their claim that this is "not a defining intersection" beyond a personal brigade against me making categories they deem trivial. I don't see how removing this category improves Wikipedia at all. The evidence above should more than make the claim that this intersection is valid and worthy of a place on Wikipedia. Nayyn (talk) 11:39, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
the argument suggested this intersection was trivial " Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2024_May_18#Category:Sportspeople_who_died_in_wars does not make sense in this case" for the reasons given above. Nayyn (talk) 11:49, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But how can the 4 way intersection be defining given that we already decided that the two way isn't? SMasonGarrison 02:21, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Request: Please don't double vote. @Nayyn SMasonGarrison 02:22, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Government in Riverside, California

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Category is for a city with its own government. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 01:19, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Mayoral elections in Irvine, California

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: All of the articles in this category redirect to the same page. Not useful for navigation. –Aidan721 (talk) 03:08, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Aidan721: This is also the case for the following 15 siblings:
Do you want to nominate those as well (I believe those are all the subcats of Category:Mayoral elections in the United States by city that have this exact issue)? (As was the case with the already nominated category, for some of those siblings, the eponymous article would need to be added to some cats before nominating the cat for deletion.)
